Decatur Craft Beer Festival 2018 was GREATER!
We had the opportunity to attend the Decatur Craft Beer Festival 2018 in the great city of Decatur, where yes, everything is GREATER! This year the Decatur Craft Beer Festival celebrated their 20th year of putting on the festival. The event took place on the square in Downtown Decatur on Saturday, October 20th. Even though it rained a bit that day, it didn’t stop anyone from having a great time. VIP ticket sales from this event benefited the Georgia Craft Brewers Guild, which is the advocacy group supporting local Georgia Craft Breweries.
The Venue
The Decatur Town Square is an amazing place and truly the heart of the town. The square itself is home to numerous restaurants and bars. Many of those local businesses participated in the festival at some capacity, so it was great to see them come together to support such a great cause.
Guests were able to walk around the square to experience different beers. If you were a VIP ticket holder, you also had the opportunity to experience some unique more limited beers & enjoy some tasty grub from some of the local restaurants. The food options were some of the best we have ever experienced at any beer festival we’ve attended.
Another thing that really stood out was none of the beer lines were too long. If there was a line, it went very quickly. There were bands playing throughout the event as well as a DJ down the street, which gave attendees multiple vibes to enjoy.
Favorite Beers
Honestly, it was hard to pick our favorites at this beer festival. All of the breweries in attendance brought their best stuff! We were really impressed with the selection and quality of the beers we had throughout the event. Out of all of the beer festivals we have attended so far, this one ranks as one of the best on our list for best selection. But alas, here are some we can’t stop thinking about.
General Admission Section Beers
Stone Brewing | ParaXtranormal IPA is a special draft-only release that combines real mandarin orange and pineapple with a more-than-generous addition of hops. It’s juicy, ultra-refreshing and of course as all you would expect from any Stone beer….hoppy!
Heavy Seas | Tropi Cannon Citrus IPA was one of the best citrus IPAs we have ever had! This beer packs a full blast of blood orange, grapefruit, mango and lemon flavor.
Central State Brewing | Ottermelon was one of the most refreshingly tart beers we had! It’s a gose with sea salt and watermelon. Honestly, it tasted just like a sour watermelon candy and we couldn’t get enough of it.
Nowhere in Particular | Batch #029 Cherry Limeade Sour & Batch #028 Colada IPA were some of our favorite beers at the entire event! We had only recently heard of this brewery before seeing them at this event, but we walked away excited to see what they do next!
Coastal Empire Brew Co | Southern Delight Praline Amber was the perfect beer to enjoy on a rainy Fall day! The beer is brewed with a generous addition of Georgia Pecans and Madagascar vanilla without being overly sweet. It is something you can easily enjoy multiple pours of.
Highland Brewing | Gaelic Ale was the first craft beer ever made in Asheville and one of the best amber beers we have had to date. Gaelic is exceptionally balanced between malty sweetness and delicate hop bitterness, making it the perfect beer to enjoy any time of year and it can be paired with many kinds of food.
VIP Section Beers

New Realm Brewing | Hazy Like A Fox was one of the best hazy IPAs we’ve had in a while! It was super refreshing and well balanced. It is the kind of beer you just can’t get enough of. We hope they decide to make this one of their yearly offerings.
Good Word Brewing | Anna Fantastic is a tart cherry and tangerine sour that will leave you craving more. It was just enough tart without being too overwhelming. You were able to get both the cherry and tangerine flavors from it which left your palate doing a happy dance.
Favorite Moments
One of our favorite moments of the event was running into our friend Ale Sharpton! He is someone who is well known in the Atlanta Beer Scene and one of our favorite people we’ve met so far! It’s always great to share some beers with other people who are as passionate about them as we are!
The VIP section was one of our favorite VIP experiences we’ve had at a craft beer festival! It’s definitely worth paying a little extra and treating yourself to an elevated experience that includes delicious food!
Another highlight for us was discovering a completely gluten free beer that actually tastes GOOD! Guten Beer uses a state of the art facility located in the Rocky Mountains specifically designed and catering to a 100% gluten free beer. Over the years, they have perfected their recipe using a combination of various gluten free malts, hops, and enzymes. They recently took home GOLD at the 2018 World Beer Cup in the Gluten Free Beer Category! We can definitely see why they won and will be on the lookout for more great things from them!
We’ve heard from many people the Decatur Craft Beer Festival was one of THE best beer festivals to attend in Atlanta. After experiencing it for ourselves, we can honestly say that we can definitely AGREE! Decatur really is where it is GREATER! All of the volunteers working the event were enthusiastic and took the time to really get to know more about the beers they were pouring so they could give thoughtful recommendations. We can’t wait to go back again next year and highly recommend that you add it to your list of must attend events!
