A wise man once told us that education is important, and we here at Hoplight Social serve to help educate you in the wonderful world of beer. This Friday, April 7th is #NationalBeerDay. So instead of telling you about the history of beer, blah blah blah, we decided to cut out all the boring things and get to the part that we love best, cracking open a fresh brew.

Our team picked their favorite beers at the moment to share with you. Here’s a list of  what we will be cracking open in celebration of all things beer:

Kristina – King Harbor Brewing Coconut IPA

King Harbor Brewing Co. Coconut IPASometimes, you just gotta go tropical. What’s the purpose of drinking, anyways? It’s a mini-vacation, a place where all your stress melts away. For Kristina, there’s nothing better than King Harbor’s Coconut IPA. This is hands down the best Coconut IPA she’s had to date. With just enough coconut undertones to offset the inherent bitterness of an IPA, King Harbor really makes tropical tasty.

William – New Belgium Juicy Watermelon

New Belgium Juicy WatermelonIt’s officially springtime, meaning sunshine, fresh fruit, and allergies. Luckily New Belgium Brewing were able to bottle a little bit of spring in their Juicy Watermelon Ale. This watermelon lime ale is definitely a unique brew. Despite sounding like a pack of chewing gum, cracking open a bottle is like something out of a movie; the birds start chirping, butterflies flutter by, and the sun smiles down on you. Well, not literally, but that’s definitely what it feels like. It’s the perfect beer to crack open at your next BBQ.

Karen – Little Miss Brewing Blitzkrieg Berliner Weisse

Watch out! This is an all out attack on your taste buds. As a sour, the Little Miss Brewing Blitzkrieg Berliner tends to be a little softer, leaving a clean, citrusy note on the palate. It’s a nice beer to sip on while the sun is out since it’s so light and refreshing. As a sour, it tends to be equally as polarizing. Nevertheless, trust us and give this beer a try; if you don’t like it, Karen will personally come and finish it for you.

Kelly – Lagunitas Brewing Undercover Investigation Shutdown Ale

How much is too much? 7 percent? 8 percent? Dare we even say 9 percent? At some point, we begin to enter wine territory, but it appears as if nobody told Lagunitas that. At a whopping 9.6 percent, you might expect the Undercover Investigation Shutdown to be as bitter as your ex…yet it goes down surprisingly smooth. With an initial fruity taste that fades into a malty mix towards the end, the Undercover Investigation Shutdown Ale is exactly that: sneaky. Drink with caution; 3 of these will have you wondering where you are.

Monique – Bay City Brewing Co. Power Play IPA

Bay City Brewing Co. Power Play IPAHops make us happy, so it only makes sense that on our pursuit of happiness, we have at least one true IPA. Nothing special, no gimmicks; as the beer that single-handedly started the craft brewery scene in San Diego, it’s only logical that it ends up being someone’s favorite. But instead of trying to cram bitterness down our throats, Bay City Brewing does something special. It found the goldilocks zone, just enough bite to let you know who’s boss, but not enough to make it undrinkable. This beer really rounds out the whole San Diego beer scene in one sip.

Nick – Karl Strauss Whiskey Sour

Karl Strauss Whiskey SourNot a lot of people like barrel aged beers, and not a lot of people like sours. Well luckily, Karl Strauss made a beer just for me then. Their Whiskey Sour is as good as it gets. As the name implies, it’s a sour aged in a whiskey barrel; and since I’m not old enough (nor do I enjoy) drinking whiskey neat, this is a nice middle ground that kind of makes me feel like an adult while actually allowing me to enjoy my drink.

As the famous philosopher Plato once said, “He was a wise man who invented beer.” So drink up! If the man who invented beer was a wise man, then we as beer drinkers must be geniuses. On #NationalBeerDay, we can’t let our genius go to waste! Cheers!
