Women in Beer: Zuri Coleman, Brewer at Second Self Beer

After making the move to Atlanta, GA, we immediately started hearing people talk about Zuri Coleman as one of the best female brewers in the area! We were lucky to have the opportunity to hang out with her, learn more about her humble beginnings, and her passions.

After graduating from college, Zuri started with Second Self behind the bar and found herself getting more and more involved. Thus ultimately lead her to a new passion and position as one of their brewers.

On her free time, she enjoys playing video games, hanging out with her partner and dog, and enjoys a good musical. After meeting her, and trying some of her favorite beers she has worked on, we can definitely understand why she has earned herself such a great reputation. Her Margarita in Gose is one of our favorite margarita inspired beers we have ever had! Learn more about Zuri, where she gets her inspiration from, and her advice for women wanting to get into the industry below!

Tell us a little more about yourself, and how you support the brewery.

My day to day heavily involves brewing, and more specifically the production of wort. Other tasks that I complete daily include: transferring and filtering the beer, cleaning tanks, etc. On rare occasions, I will also help with cleaning kegs and labeling cans. Before I became a brewer, that was how I first got started working behind the scenes.

How long have you been a professional brewer?

I’ve been brewing at a professional level for nearly two years. Three if you include working in the cellar. I recently finished up at the American Brewers Guild and have a certificate in Intensive Brewing Science and Engineering.

Where or who do you get your inspiration from?

I mostly get my inspiration based on what I am doing at the time with my friends. The inspiration for the Margarita in Gose came from a time in my life when I was having margaritas once a week with my friends.

What is your favorite part about being a brewer?

My favorite thing about being a brewer at Second Self is that I’m able to pitch any ideas to the bosses and they are willing to try nearly anything. Not many brewers can say that. A lot of other breweries you have to jump through so many hoops to get things approved.

Share an interesting brewing experience.

During a brew a few years ago the pipes got clogged up and we had to dump the grain and wort via the man way on the mash tun. It took hours to shovel the hot grain up.

Is there anyone, in particular, you would like to do a collaboration with and why?

I really don’t have anyone specific in mind, and am open to doing a collaboration anytime the opportunity arises. I recently did a collaboration for International Women’s Day with Abbey of the Holy Goats. We made a Belgian IPA with the YCH Hops, which was the Pink Boots Hop Blend this year.

Have you met many other women brewers?

Yeah. There are a few of us in Georgia. Like I mentioned above, we recently did a collaboration with Kathy of Abbey of the Holy Goats. We have the beer, She Can Brew It in the taproom currently.

Anything exciting coming up with Second Self Brewing that you can share with us?

Two upcoming events that I’m really excited about are:
On Sunday, May 6th, we are having a can release of Make IPA Great Again. Its a throwback Double IPA and really delicious.
On Sunday, May 27th, we are having our “Feed Diversity: Building a Bigger Table” event. We are teaming up with the artisan butcher shop Pine Street Market to highlight Atlanta’s diverse restaurant community. You can learn more about it by visiting our Facebook Event.

What advice would you give other women that are trying to get into the industry?

Don’t let men with fragile egos bring you down. If you know your shit own it. Don’t let them stop you from what you want to do.

We can definitely raise a glass to that!
